《FINAL FANTASY》于1987年登场,以其沉稳的剧情及精美的画面受到了众多关注,是全系列的第一款作品。

玩家将会在游戏中化身为光之战士,为了夺取水晶失去的光辉而踏上冒险的旅程。
侧视的战斗场面、游戏开始时的“职业”选择及游戏中的“转职”、在广阔的世界中使用各种交通工具进行移动,这些设定在今后的系列作品中均已成为了固定要素。本作就是《FINAL FANTASY》系列的原点。

在游戏中同时还收录有之前的移植作品中新追加的两个特殊迷宫——“混沌之魂”与“时之迷宫”。
